It only takes three simple steps to get these exact beachy waves:
But before you begin, there’s one thing you must know:
How to french braid.
French braiding can take some practice, but it’s super easy once you’ve got it down! If you’re not completely comfortable french braiding (or if you don’t know someone who can french braid your hair) I’d suggest practicing just a bit!
Here is a YouTube tutorial to follow along with if you want to learn to french braid.
Once you can french braid, you’re all set! Let’s get on to the steps.
The technique
Decide how many sections you want to braid
This step is pretty important. This is based on what type of hair you have and it will determine how ‘intense’ the waves are.
Remember, more intense waves will last longer.
I personally have thin hair. I choose to braid two sections to get my results (which you will see down below).
It can be hard to tell at first, but you’re unsure how many sections to braid, I’d suggest doing two and seeing how that works for you. If your hair is super thin, one large braid might work for you. If your hair is super thick, you may want to try three or four sections.
Section your hair and braid
Keep in mind where you want your hair to be parted while parting your hair. It’s okay if the sections are uneven in size.
After you’ve sectioned your hair, french braid the sections.
Try to braid your hair as tightly as possible (while remaining comfortable). This will help to make sure that the braids don’t fall apart while you sleep and it will make the waves more defined.
Here’s what my hair looks like after it is braided:
Sleep!
Doing these beachy waves overnight works the best because it gives your hair a long time to form the waves. But you can pretty much do them whenever you want.
The longer your hair is braided, the more defined the waves will be and the longer they will last.
Know your own hair! If your hair typically doesn’t hold curls or waves well, keep your hair braided as long as possible.
Doing this technique overnight also makes it a great on-the-go hairstyle for school and work!
Tips to make these beachy waves perfect!
Now that you know the basic technique, you have to know how to perfect it!
These tips will seriously make SUCH A BIG difference.
Use no crease hair ties
This is a game changer.
Using no crease hair ties is so important because they prevent getting an awful crease at the bottom of your hair, which can ruin the whole look!
Here’s an example of what my hair looks like with and without no crease hair ties:
On the left side, you can really see the awful creases that normal hair ties make, which can sometimes ruin the look!
I HIGHLY suggest getting a pack of these hair ties. They’re super affordable (mostly under $10), comfortable and don’t pull on the hair, and they really do their job!
Check out my favorite pack of no crease hair ties that I’ve been using for years! I have them in the color black, but if you’re looking for some fun colors, here’s a great option!
Don’t brush your hair
Don’t brush your hair because it can easily make your waves super frizzy and poofy! Plus, it can take away some of the wave.
Instead, just use your fingers to comb through the waves. This has saved me so many times!
That being said, I recommend brushing your hair before you actually start braiding it to prevent any future knots.
Use a satin (or silk) pillowcase
I’ve been using a satin pillowcase for years now…and I love it!
On top of them feeling very comfortable and luxurious, satin and silk pillowcase actually have great benefits for hair! They help prevent breakage on the ends, prevent frizz, and make your hair more smooth.
I especially love using my satin pillowcase when I’m doing my overnight beachy waves because although I want my waves to have that beachy look, I don’t want them to look wild!
Fun fact: Satin pillowcases are also great for your skin and complexion!

Here’s some great satin pillowcase and silk pillowcase options that are similar to the ones that I’ve been using for years. I absolutely love mine and they still look and feel good as new!

Use damp hair
Use damp hair to get waves that will hold all day! Especially if you have thicker hair or hair that doesn’t usually hold curls or waves, this will really help!
Make sure that your hair is just damp (I’d say about 75% dry) and NOT soaking wet!
If it’s too wet, not only will it be harder to braid well, but it might not dry completely overnight. If the braids don’t dry, it can make them super frizzy when you take the braids out in the morning!
Use a hair dryer to to hold waves
Another technique you can use to make the waves hold longer is to blow it with a hot hair dryer.
Just like when you use a hot curling iron or straightener to style your hair, the heat from the blow dryer will help the waves to last much longer!
It isn’t required, but try it out if you’re worried the waves won’t last all day!
And that’s it!
With this technique and these tips, I know that you’ll easily be able to get perfect beachy waves overnight. Let me know how it works for you!
